Most people visit sites from a phone. The search engine takes this into account: it judges a site by how it looks and works specifically on a mobile screen. Even if your customers later place an order from a computer, the first acquaintance almost certainly happened with a phone in hand.

Why the mobile version decides everything

Most people visit sites from a phone. The search engine takes this into account: it judges a site by how it looks and works specifically on a mobile screen. Even if your customers later place an order from a computer, the first acquaintance almost certainly happened with a phone in hand.

Hence a simple consequence: a site that is awkward on mobile loses rankings across the board — including desktop results.

Responsive design instead of a separate mobile version

A responsive site is one site that adapts itself to the screen width. One address, one text, one promotion effort.

A separate mobile version on a subdomain is the harder route. It has to be kept in sync with the main one: if the content diverges, you get duplication, and the search engine does not understand which version to show. If you already have such a version, check that it has the same content and the same settings as the main one.

Load speed

A mobile user expects instant loading and does not forgive delays: the connection is worse, patience is shorter. A delay of just one second can reduce conversion by 7%.

For the search engine, slow loading is a double minus. Speed is a ranking factor in itself, and it also drags bounces along with it: people leave without waiting, and that is a signal that the page does not answer the query.

Google PageSpeed Insights is a convenient way to check — it both scores the page and shows what exactly is slowing it down.

What usually slows a site down on a phone

  • Heavy images. An image sized for a desktop screen loads on the phone in full, although it is displayed three times smaller. Compression and modern formats help.
  • Excess server requests. Dozens of small files instead of a few combined ones.
  • No caching. On every visit the browser downloads everything again, even what has not changed.
  • Third-party scripts. Chats, widgets, counters — each one adds delay.

Easy navigation on a touchscreen

A finger is not a cursor. It is bigger and less precise. Hence the requirements: buttons and links must be large enough to hit without aiming, and neighbouring elements spaced apart so you do not tap the wrong thing.

Check the main action on your own phone: how many taps to an enquiry, is the company phone number visible without scrolling, does the menu open first time, does a pop-up cover the button.

Local search

If the business serves a specific city or district, mobile search is your main channel: people search on the go and choose from what is nearby. That means the address, phone number and opening hours must be in a prominent place and display correctly on a small screen.

The phone number should be tappable to call, the address should open a map. These are small things that turn a view into an enquiry.

What to track after the fixes

Mobile performance is looked at separately from desktop — in analytics they are different segments. It is useful to regularly compare four things: the share of mobile traffic, load speed on mobile, bounce rate and the share of enquiries from phones.

If the share of mobile traffic is high but the share of mobile enquiries is low, the problem is not the traffic but the mobile version itself.

Frequently asked questions

The site opens on a phone. Is that enough?

No. “It opens” and “it can be used” are different things. If you have to pinch-zoom to read the text or hit a button, the site is not responsive.

Do I need a separate mobile app?

For most businesses — no. An app is justified when the customer returns regularly. For one-off enquiries a good mobile site is enough, and it is cheaper to maintain.

What load speed counts as normal?

Go not by an absolute figure but by the PageSpeed Insights report: it shows both the score and a list of specific problems. Almost always it is worth starting with images — that is the quickest win.

How do I check the mobile version if I only have one phone?

A desktop browser has a view mode for different screens. But do the final check on a real device and on mobile data, not on your home wi-fi.

What to do next

Open your site on a phone and walk the customer's path to the end: find the service, understand the price, submit an enquiry. Everything that annoys you annoys the visitor too — only they will not put up with it.
