There are two different problems, and they are fixed in different ways. The first: the site is not in the index — the search engine simply does not know the pages exist. The second: the pages are in the index, but rank so low that nobody ever reaches them.

What “invisible in search” actually means

There are two different problems, and they are fixed in different ways. The first: the site is not in the index — the search engine simply does not know the pages exist. The second: the pages are in the index, but rank so low that nobody ever reaches them.

Checking is easy. Type your site's address into the search box with the site: operator — if the results show noticeably fewer pages than the site has, the problem is indexing. If the pages are there but there is no traffic, the problem is rankings.

Reason 1. Poorly thought-out structure

Structure is how pages link to each other and how logically the sections are organised. When it is tangled, both sides lose: a visitor cannot find what they need and leaves, and the search robot cannot tell which pages on the site matter most.

A typical symptom: an important service page sits four levels deep, reachable only through three clicks from the footer. To a search engine that signals the page is secondary.

Reason 2. No HTTPS

A site without a secure protocol gets flagged by the browser as unsafe before the visitor has even seen the content. Data a visitor enters into a form is transmitted in plain text. The effect on rankings is direct: an unsecured connection has long been a recognised negative factor.

The fix is quick: a certificate is installed within a few hours; after that you need to check that every internal link and image has also moved to https and that the old address redirects.

Reason 3. Slow loading

The longer a page takes to load, the more people close it without waiting. The search engine reads this as bounces: users arrive and leave immediately — so the page must not answer the query. Rankings slide.

Speed is most often eaten up by heavy uncompressed images, unnecessary third-party scripts and missing caching. You can check for free — PageSpeed Insights shows both a score and a specific list of problems.

Reason 4. Errors in sitemap.xml and robots.txt

These two files control what the robot crawls and what it skips. A mistake in them is the most frustrating of all: the site may be excellent yet closed to indexing by a single line.

What to check first:

  • robots.txt does not block sections that should be indexed;
  • sitemap.xml lists every page that matters and none that have been deleted;
  • the sitemap is referenced in robots.txt and submitted in the webmaster panel;
  • no stray noindex tag left over from development remains on the pages.

Reason 5. Incorrect internal linking

Internal links distribute weight between pages and hint at what matters on the site. When linking is built at random, both visitor and robot get lost.

Broken links are a separate problem. They pile up unnoticed: a page is deleted, an address changes, but the link stays. Check both the logic of the connections and whether the links themselves still work.

What to do if the technical side is fine

Sometimes there are no errors and still no visibility. Then the issue lies in the content and the queries:

  • No pages for the queries. The search engine has nothing to show: each group of queries needs its own page with its own heading.
  • The text does not answer the question. The page is formally on topic, but the visitor finds no answer and goes back to the results.
  • Two pages about the same thing. They compete with each other, and neither pulls ahead.

The analysis starts with keywords: until it is clear which queries you should be found for, there is nothing to optimise.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does a site appear in search after launch?

The first pages usually enter the index within a few days or weeks — faster if you add the site to the webmaster panel and submit the sitemap manually. Rankings take longer to build.

The site was in search and then disappeared. What happened?

Most often, technical changes: a migration, changed addresses without redirects, indexing accidentally blocked, an update after which pages started returning errors. Start with the webmaster panel: it shows when the pages vanished and what the robot received instead.

Does buying links help?

As a quick fix — no. Links from low-quality sites are easily detected and do more harm than good. What works are links placed on real, relevant sites that people actually click through.

Do you need a blog for visibility?

It covers informational queries — “how to choose”, “how much does it cost”, “what is the difference”. Service pages do not catch those queries, yet that is exactly where people come from, before they are ready to buy.

What to do next

Go through the five points in order: index, secure connection, speed, service files, internal links. It takes an evening and usually explains most of the drop.

If you want a review of the whole site, not just these points — that is what our SEO promotion service does. After that, you will find our guides on how to choose keywords and how to increase site traffic useful.
