Why a business needs video

Video does what text cannot: it shows. A service that is hard to describe in words is easier to film once — and the client will have half as many questions. That is why video has become a mandatory part of promotion even for small companies.

The benefit comes from several things at once.

  • Attention. A moving picture holds a person longer than a paragraph of text — in the feed, that is decisive.
  • Purchase decision. Someone who has watched a video about a product understands it better and decides faster.
  • Trust. Video shows people and process, not promises. A client testimonial on camera is more convincing than a written one.
  • Search. A video on a page increases the time a person spends there — for search engines that is a positive signal.
  • Reach. Video platforms and short formats are pushed by algorithms more actively than any other type of post.

Goal first, camera second

The most common mistake is to shoot a video because “everyone needs video”. Then it turns out nobody knows where to show it or what it is supposed to change.

The goal determines everything else: length, tone, platform, budget. A brand-awareness clip, a product demo, a tutorial and a client testimonial are four different shoots, and you cannot film them all in one go.

It helps to put the goal into a single sentence before work begins: “show what a first appointment looks like, to take away the fear of those coming for the first time”. From a sentence like that, the script almost writes itself.

The script matters more than the gear

A good script is the foundation of a video. A poorly shot clip with a clear idea will be watched to the end; a beautifully shot one about nothing gets switched off at the fifth second.

The structure is simple: a hook in the first seconds, the substance, the conclusion, what to do next. The first seconds matter most — that is where a person decides whether to keep watching. Opening with a logo and the words “we are a company that for many years has…” is a guaranteed way to lose the viewer.

A format that works in its own right is the tutorial. It helps the client understand the product, takes some questions off the managers’ hands and does not look like advertising. The second is the story: a case from practice, a client’s journey, a breakdown of a mistake. Stories get watched to the end and discussed.

Shooting: what really matters

Picture quality affects perception, but priorities are usually set wrong. In order of importance: sound, light, a steady frame, the camera. Bad sound kills a video more reliably than a bad picture — viewers do not forgive noise and echo.

For most tasks a modern phone, a lavalier microphone and daylight by a window are enough. A studio shoot is needed where the video will be the face of the brand for a long time: an image film, a product presentation, advertising for wide reach.

It is worth shooting with a margin of formats straight away: horizontal for the site and video platforms, vertical for short clips on social media. Redoing it later costs more than planning for it on the shoot.

Where to publish

A video left on a single platform works at half strength. The sensible scheme is to publish it everywhere your audience lives, adapting it to each format.

On the site, video goes on service pages and product cards — there it directly affects the decision. Dedicated video platforms give it a long life: the clip is found through search even a year later. Social media and messengers are about fast reach and short vertical versions.

One shoot can almost always be broken down into several posts: the full version, a short cut, a separate fragment answering a frequent question. That noticeably lowers the cost of each post.

Video and search

A video is found by more than its picture. The title, description and tags are the text it is indexed by, and filling them in at random means losing part of your traffic.

The same thing works as with articles: the phrases people actually search for, placed at the start of the title. It is useful to add a transcript or a text description to the video — that way the page gets content that search engines can understand.

On the site, video should also be accompanied by text. A page consisting of a single player is almost empty as far as search is concerned.

How to measure the result

Views are the most useless metric available. What you need to look at is retention: the moment people switch the video off. A sharp drop at the tenth second means a problem with the opening; a steady decline towards the end is the normal picture.

Next come actions: clicks on the link in the description, enquiries after publication, reactions and shares. For videos on the site — the change in the page’s conversion rate before and after the video appeared.

Analysis here pays off directly: after a few videos it becomes clear which topics and formats get watched to the end, and the next shoots are planned with more than guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a video be?

Exactly long enough to get one idea across. Short clips for the feed live for seconds, a tutorial can run for minutes — there is no need to stretch it out for the sake of “looking serious”.

Do I have to appear on camera myself?

No, but a face and a voice build trust more strongly than a voice-over. If speaking on camera is uncomfortable, start with the process and your hands: that is live footage too.

How many videos does it take to see a result?

One shows nothing. Plan a series: regularity matters here as much as it does with posts — and it lets you understand what exactly is working.

Can I do without a production budget?

For short clips and tutorials — quite easily. A budget is needed where the picture itself matters: image and advertising materials.

What to do next

Write down the three questions clients ask most often before buying and shoot a short phone video answering each one. It is the fastest way to check whether video works in your field — and such clips almost always go straight to work.
