Structured data markup is one of those technical tasks a site owner puts off for years: the pages work, requests keep coming in, so why touch the code? Meanwhile, a competitor's search result shows the price, rating and availability next to the title, while yours shows two lines of text. The difference in clicks between such snippets is noticeable even at a glance.

Let's look at what Schema.org markup is, what it gives a site in 2026, which types of it search engines have dropped and how to implement it without errors.

What structured data markup is and how it works

Markup is service code that explains the meaning of a page's content to a search engine: where the product name is, where the price is, where the company address is, who wrote the article. A person sees all this anyway, but a robot needs a hint in a single format. Schema.org serves as that shared vocabulary for Yandex and Google.

Site visitors do not see the markup, and the page looks exactly the same. What changes is how the search engine understands the content and how it can display it in the results.

Ways to add markup

Structured data can be passed in two ways. The first is a separate script block in the page code that lists all the properties; Google calls this the preferred method, and it is easier to maintain. The second is attributes placed directly inside the tags with visible text. Yandex understands both, so the choice depends mainly on the CMS and how the templates are built.

What markup gives a site in 2026

The main benefit of structured data is a more visible and informative snippet that attracts more clicks at the same positions. It does not affect rankings directly, but it helps the search engine understand the page more precisely and show it to the right people.

Rich results in Google

Google uses markup for rich results: product prices and availability, ratings, breadcrumbs, event details, job postings, recipes. There is no guarantee they will be shown: the search engine decides for itself whether to display additional elements. But without markup, the chance of getting such a snippet is close to zero.

Snippets in Yandex

Yandex also takes data from Schema.org to build snippets, especially in product results and for organizations. Marking up the price, availability and delivery terms also supports commercial factors: it is easier for the search engine to confirm that the page has everything needed to make a purchase. We covered what else Yandex checks in detail in our article on commercial ranking factors.

How AI models understand the page

AI answers in search are assembled from pages the system has understood well. In Yandex, AI answers from Alice (Yandex's voice assistant) appear for about 42% of queries, and the sources are almost always taken from the top ten results. Markup does not guarantee a place in such an answer, but it conveys the facts unambiguously: the price, address, author and date. How to work with a search engine that answers on its own is covered in our piece on zero-click search.

What markup different sites need

The set of types depends on what the company does. There is no need to mark up everything; it is enough to cover the site's main entities.

Online store

For a store, product markup matters most. It passes:

  • the product name and description;
  • the price and currency;
  • stock availability;
  • the rating and number of reviews, if they are on the page;
  • images and the SKU.

Breadcrumbs are worth marking up separately: they show the catalog structure and replace the long page URL in the snippet with a clear path.

Service company

A service website needs organization markup: the name, logo, phone number, address and links to official social media pages. If the company has an office or a location where it receives clients, it is described as a local business.

Address and opening hours

For a local business it is especially important to specify the address, coordinates and opening hours. This data must match what is listed in the maps listing and on the contacts page, otherwise the search engine will receive conflicting information.

Blog and useful content

Articles are marked up as publications with an author, a publication date and an update date. This is especially useful for expert topics: the search engine sees who wrote the piece and how fresh it is.

Which types of markup search engines have dropped

Some of the markup that used to produce eye-catching snippets no longer works. Google stopped showing step-by-step how-to instructions in rich results back in 2023, and in May 2026 it also removed question-and-answer snippets. You do not have to delete code with this markup, as it is not treated as an error, but you should no longer count on extra lines in Google results.

The takeaway is simple: markup needs to be checked against search engines' current requirements from time to time. What worked three years ago may be just extra code today.

How to implement markup on a site

Implementation starts with an audit: which pages the site has and which data on them is worth marking up. After that, the usual order is:

  1. List the page types: home page, catalog, product page, service, article, contacts.
  2. For each type, choose the appropriate markup and a list of properties.
  3. Add the markup to the templates so that it is filled in automatically rather than by hand on every page.
  4. Check several pages of each type with validators.
  5. After a couple of weeks, review the reports in the webmaster panels.

WordPress has ready-made plugins that cover the basic types. In 1C-Bitrix, markup is usually built into the component templates. On Tilda, some data can be passed through the page settings, and the rest is added by inserting code. Ready-made solutions are convenient, but their output still needs to be checked.

How to check markup without causing harm

Markup should be checked right after implementation and after every template update. Yandex Webmaster has a structured data validator for this, and Google has a rich results testing tool and reports in its webmaster console.

Mark up only what is visible

The main rule: markup should contain only data the visitor can see on the page. A rating that does not exist on the site, made-up reviews or a price different from the one on the product page violate search engine guidelines. For structured data spam, Google can apply manual actions and strip the site of rich snippets.

Keep it up to date

Prices and availability change, and the markup must change along with them. If the markup pulls data from the same database as the product page, there will be no discrepancies. Manual inserts almost always go out of date over time.

Structured data as part of overall SEO work

Markup is part of a site's technical SEO optimization, not a separate magic button. It strengthens pages that are already indexed properly and answer the query, but it will not save a site with slow loading, duplicates and weak copy. What else hurts visibility is covered in our article on the factors that reduce a site's visibility.

That is why website SEO optimization usually includes markup as one item of a technical audit, alongside speed, indexing and structure. An experienced SEO specialist first fixes critical problems and only then works on snippets. Website promotion in search as a whole is built on a combination of technical work, content and commercial factors, and without any one of these parts the result will be weaker. So if you have decided to order SEO promotion, it makes sense to include markup in the overall work plan.

When it is reasonable to hire a contractor

If the site has hundreds of products or a non-standard CMS, it is easier to hand markup over to specialists than to figure it out yourself. Before you order website SEO optimization, ask whether markup is included in the work and how the contractor will check the result. The price of website SEO optimization and the price of SEO promotion depend on the number of pages, the state of the code and the competition in the niche, so an honest estimate appears only after an audit. Ordering SEO optimization just for the snippets, however, is usually not worth it: markup delivers more together with the rest of the work.

Bottom line: is markup worth the effort

It is, if your site sells products, receives clients at an office or publishes expert content. The work is done once, while the snippets and the clarity of your pages for search engines last a long time. Start with the main types, check them with a validator and come back to the markup with every site update.
