Local promotion.
In local search, a listing on maps often brings more enquiries than a website. We look at what to fill in, how to collect reviews and how to measure results.
Local promotion is work aimed at clients who are nearby. A salon, a clinic, a car service, a café, repairs, city delivery, any offline location: the person is looking not for “the best in the country” but for “the nearest one that is open now”.

Who needs this
Local promotion is work aimed at clients who are nearby. A salon, a clinic, a car service, a café, repairs, city delivery, any offline location: the person is looking not for “the best in the country” but for “the nearest one that is open now”.
Behaviour here differs from ordinary search. The query is short, the decision is quick, the choice is made from the first few options on the map. A position on the fifth screen does not exist.
Hence the priorities: the listing on maps matters more than the website, reviews matter more than copy, and up-to-date contact details matter more than design.
The company listing on maps
This is the main tool of local promotion, and it is free. A completed listing on maps and in directories often brings more enquiries than a website.
- Exact address and pin — the pin should stand where the entrance is, not in the middle of the building.
- Opening hours — including holidays and breaks, otherwise some people will arrive at a closed door.
- Categories and services — listed in full, because that is how the company gets found.
- Photos — the entrance, the interior, staff, work. Real shots, not stock.
- Phone and links — working and matching those on the website.
Fill it in to the end. An incomplete listing loses to a completed one even at equal distance and with identical ratings.
Reviews and rating
In local search, reviews decide the outcome more often than in any other. A person compares the three nearest locations and chooses the one with the higher rating and more reviews.
What works is not a one-off drive but a process: ask for feedback right after a successfully completed job, briefly and with a direct link. An unhappy client will write on their own; a happy one needs to be asked.
Reply to every review. Future clients read the replies, and a calm handling of a complaint is more convincing than a spotless listing without a single response.
A website built for local demand
In local promotion a website needs only a few things, but they are mandatory.
The city and district — right in the headings and copy, not only in the footer. Search must understand unambiguously where you operate.
Contact details in a prominent place — address, phone, opening hours, a map for getting there, landmarks. For a location with a non-obvious entrance, a “how to find us” description removes some of the drop-offs.
A mobile version — most local queries are made from a phone on the move, so the call button and route building must work in a single tap.
Separate pages for districts or branches — if there are several locations. A generic “contacts” page with a list of addresses works worse.
Presence in your neighbourhood
Online is not the only channel. For a local business, what happens physically nearby works well.
Taking part in local events, partnering with neighbouring companies in adjacent niches, presence in neighbourhood communities and chats, a visible sign and wayfinding to the entrance. All of this gives not reach but recognition, which at neighbourhood scale matters more.
Partnering with neighbours is underrated most of all. Agreeing on mutual recommendations with a non-competing business that has the same audience costs zero roubles and works for years.
How to tell what is working
Look at local metrics rather than overall website traffic: how many people viewed the listing, how many built a route, how many tapped the phone number, where enquiries come from.
A simple method that always works is to ask those who get in touch how they heard about you, and to write the answers down. For a small company this gives a more honest picture than any analytics system.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I have a listing on maps?
Preferably. The listing brings calls, but you cannot put a detailed description of services, prices and answers to questions on it. Besides, the platform may change its rules, while the website stays with you.
How quickly do results appear?
Completing the listing and setting up contact details take effect within weeks. Accumulating reviews and strengthening positions take months.
What if there is a strong competitor nearby?
Do not compete on every front. It is easier to win on something specific: a narrow specialisation, opening hours, speed, ease of booking — one thing where you are objectively better.
Is it worth running advertising tied to the district?
It makes sense once the listing is complete and reviews have been collected. Advertising that leads to an empty listing or a website without contact details wastes money.
What to do next
Find your company on maps from your phone the way a client would: by service name and district. See what position you ended up in, what is shown in the listing and what is missing from it. That is your task list for the coming week.
