Word of mouth.
Someone who came on a friend's recommendation needs no convincing. We look at how to get more referrals and why you can't grow on them alone.
Word of mouth looks archaic next to ad accounts and analytics. In reality it is still the cheapest and most convincing channel: someone who came on a friend's recommendation needs no convincing.

Why referrals still work
Word of mouth looks archaic next to ad accounts and analytics. In reality it is still the cheapest and most convincing channel: someone who came on a friend's recommendation needs no convincing.
The problem is not that referrals have stopped working. The problem is that you cannot rely on them as your only source of clients — the flow is unpredictable, and growth is capped by the size of your circle.
The right way to frame the task is this: amplify referrals and, at the same time, build manageable channels alongside them so that the business does not depend on chance.
What makes people recommend
A recommendation comes not from goodwill but from having a reason to tell the story. There are usually three.
The result was noticeably better than expected. The person counted on ordinary quality and got more — and now they have a story.
Something went off plan, but the company fixed it quickly and without argument. Such cases get retold more readily than flawless ones.
Something happened that is simply interesting to talk about: an unexpected detail, care nobody expected, a human gesture. It is exactly these small things that become the substance of a recommendation.
How to increase the flow of referrals
- Ask — directly and at the right moment, right after the client is happy. Most people are willing to recommend you; it simply does not occur to them.
- Make it easy to retell — a short, clear description of what you do, a link, a business card, a ready-made post. The less effort it takes, the more often people do it.
- Give a reason to come back to the conversation — a useful piece of content, an update, a reminder that the person will forward on.
- Say thank you — visibly and in a human way. Not necessarily with money, but always so that the person who recommended you notices.
- Stay in touch — a company gets recommended when people remember it. A firm that drops out of sight is the first to drop out of recommendations.
Separately, make sure gratitude does not turn into paying for reviews. A bought recommendation does not work and damages trust when it comes to light.
Taking referrals online
A spoken story lives once; a written one lives for years. That is why it pays to move word of mouth into formats that new people can see.
These are reviews on platforms and maps, case studies describing the task and the result, posts by happy clients on their own social media, recommendations in topical chats and communities. The same client who used to tell two friends about you now tells a hundred strangers.
It works in reverse too: active social media and well-filled pages give the people you were recommended to a way to check the company and make sure the recommendation is justified.
How to stop depending on word of mouth
It happens that the product is good, the reviews are there, yet clients are still few and the business is barely in the black. This is the typical situation of outgrowing your circle of acquaintances.
For the flow to become constant, you need a foundation: a page or website that explains and sells; a system for tracking enquiries; a person who handles those enquiries; reasons for clients to return; live social media; properly presented reviews and case studies.
If all of the above is in place and enquiries are still few, the problem is in one of the links — and each needs to be examined separately. Most often the bottleneck turns out to be not the advertising but what happens after the click.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay clients for referrals?
An open referral programme with clear terms is fine. Hidden payment for reviews is not: people notice it, and trust is lost along with the channel.
When should you ask for a review?
Right after the client has received the result and is happy with it. A week later the emotion fades, and with it the desire to write anything.
What if there are no referrals at all?
Check the product and the service, not the channels. A lack of referrals usually means the result is perceived as ordinary rather than bad.
Does word of mouth count as a sales channel?
It does, but an unmanageable one. It is worth tracking and amplifying, but you cannot plan growth on it alone.
What to do next
Ask your last five clients how they found out about you, and ask those who came on a recommendation to leave a review on a platform. This is the shortest way to turn a one-off conversation into text that keeps working.
