Followers are a list of people who agreed to see your posts. A community is people who talk to each other, not only to you. The difference is visible immediately: in the first case there is silence or token reactions under a post; in the second, the comments discuss the topic, argue and answer newcomers' questions instead of you.

How a community differs from followers

Followers are a list of people who agreed to see your posts. A community is people who talk to each other, not only to you. The difference is visible immediately: in the first case there is silence or token reactions under a post; in the second, the comments discuss the topic, argue and answer newcomers' questions instead of you.

For a business this is a difference in money. A follower has to be persuaded anew every time. A person from the community comes back on their own, brings friends and defends the brand in other people's discussions when you are not there.

A community cannot be bought with advertising. It is built the same way any group of people forms: through a shared interest, regularity and the fact that everyone who arrives is noticed here.

Where it all begins

The first step is to understand what people gather around in the first place. Not “our company” but a topic that matters to them in its own right: renovating a flat, a child's health, promoting their own business. In this construction the brand is not the centre but a place where it is convenient to talk.

So you start with the audience: who these people are, what they do, what recurring difficulties they have, what words they use. The sources are close at hand — correspondence with customers, questions to managers, comments under other people's posts on your topic, competitors' reviews. What people lack is already written there.

A mistake at this step costs more than all the subsequent ones. If the topic is chosen wrongly, you can improve the content as much as you like — there will be no one to gather.

Content that people gather around

What works in a community is not promotional content but content a person wants to discuss or save.

  • Breakdowns and answers to questions — a direct continuation of what people are already asking.
  • Stories from practice, including unsuccessful ones. Someone else's experience inspires more trust than correct advice.
  • Posts by the members themselves — their results, questions, discoveries. This is the most valuable type of material: a person whose work has been showcased stays for a long time.
  • Behind the scenes of the company — how decisions are made, what went wrong, who does the work. It removes the distance.

Sales posts are needed too, but they cannot be the foundation. When the feed consists of offers to buy, the community turns back into a list of followers.

Conversation, not broadcasting

Active interaction is what distinguishes a living community from a shop window. You need to reply to everything: questions, thanks, criticism. Especially criticism — a calm public reply convinces readers more than a dozen compliments.

Ask questions yourself and be sure to show that you heard the answers. A poll whose results never surfaced anywhere will not gather votes a second time. But a decision taken “at members' request” turns people from spectators into co-authors.

A separate job is introducing members to each other. Tag in a reply someone who has already dealt with the question, connect two people with a similar task. As soon as members start answering each other, the community becomes resilient and stops depending on your activity every single day.

Loyalty programmes

Loyalty is reinforced not only by attention but by tangible benefit. Discounts, bonuses for repeat purchases, early access to new products, exclusive materials for regular customers — all of this gives a person a clear reason to stay.

What works is what is tied to your product. Generic gifts attract prize hunters who leave straight after the giveaway and crash the activity on their way out. It is more useful to reward the behaviour you actually need: a review, a referred friend, participation in a discussion.

Status works no worse than a discount. A special role for active members, a mention in a post, the chance to be the first to see something new — this costs nothing and is valued above a percentage discount.

Meetings and events

Live streams, webinars, live breakdowns, offline meetups — anything that moves communication from the feed into a live format. Fewer people watch these than read an ordinary post, but they are the most loyal part of the audience, and the connection after a meeting becomes different.

The format does not have to be elaborate. A half-hour stream answering questions collected in advance gives more than an event prepared for three months and held once. Repeatability matters: people must know there will be a next meeting.

How to tell the community is alive

The number of followers says almost nothing here. Look at other signs instead: do comments appear without you asking a question, do members reply to each other, do the same people come back, do new ones arrive by recommendation.

A useful metric is the share of repeat purchases and enquiries from those who have been with you a long time. A community that really works shows not in reach statistics but in revenue from regular customers.

Frequently asked questions

How many members does it take for a community to work?

Fewer than people tend to think. A dozen active people who discuss the topic and answer each other work better than a thousand silent followers.

Where is the best place to build a community?

Wherever it is convenient to talk: a chat, a group with open comments, a private channel with discussions. A platform where people cannot reply to each other does not form a community.

What to do about negativity inside?

Reply publicly and to the point, without deleting. Deleted criticism resurfaces elsewhere, and this time without your involvement. Quietly fixing the problem is something members notice and appreciate.

How long does it take?

A community is a process without an end point: it requires regular attention, not a one-off launch. On the other hand, the result does not vanish when advertising stops.

What to do next

Write down the five questions your customers ask most often and answer each one in a separate post with open comments. This is the simplest way to check whether there are people around your topic who are ready to talk.
