A brand is often confused with a logo. In practice, a logo is an identifying mark, and a brand is what a person thinks of you when they see that mark. Expectations, reputation, the sense of “one of us — not one of us”.

What a brand really is

A brand is often confused with a logo. In practice, a logo is an identifying mark, and a brand is what a person thinks of you when they see that mark. Expectations, reputation, the sense of “one of us — not one of us”.

A simple consequence follows: a brand cannot be drawn in one go. It is assembled from decisions — what you do, for whom, how you speak, how you look and how you behave when something goes wrong.

For a small company this is rather good news. Big budgets for awareness are not needed: it is enough to be consistent in the small things a customer notices every time.

Where it starts: meaning, not styling

The first step is to formulate why the company exists and by what principles it works. This is not about fine words on the “About us” page. It is a working document that decisions are later made by: whether to take on this order, whether to answer a customer this way, whether this promotion is appropriate.

The formulation is easy to test. If it can be put on a competitor's website and nothing changes, it is empty. “High quality and on time” fits everyone, and therefore says nothing.

It is more useful to write down specifics: who you help, in what situation people come to you, what you do differently from what is customary in the niche and what you deliberately refuse to do. The last point matters more than the rest: a brand is defined by what the company does not do.

How you differ

Next you need a difference that a customer can retell in their own words. That is the selling proposition — not a slogan but a clear reason to choose you.

The difference can be built on various things: narrow specialisation, speed, working format, guarantee, team composition, geography. What matters is that it is true and stands up to scrutiny — a promise the company cannot keep every time destroys a brand faster than having no promises at all.

A good way to test it is to imagine how a customer recommends you to a friend in a single phrase. If that phrase comes together, the difference has been found. If all you get is “well, they're decent guys”, the work is not finished.

The visual part

Only after the meaning does it make sense to tackle the styling. Visual identity is the logo, palette, typefaces, layout rules, the treatment of photographs and documents.

  • Logo — must be legible at small sizes, work in a single colour and not fall apart on a dark background.
  • Palette — a primary colour, one accent for calls to action and a neutral base.
  • Typefaces — two styles are usually enough, one for headings and one for body text.
  • Usage rules — where what is used, what the spacing is, what must not be done.

The last point is skipped most often, yet it is what turns a set of files into a corporate identity. Without rules, every new contractor will assemble the layout their own way, and within a year no unified image will remain.

How the brand speaks

Tone of voice is as much a part of the brand as the logo, and it works more often. A customer sees the logo once, but correspondence with a manager, the copy on the website and replies to reviews — constantly.

Decide how you speak: formally or informally, whether jokes are acceptable, whether you use professional terms, how you apologise for a mistake. Write it down as a list with examples of “we write like this — not like this” and hand it to everyone who communicates with customers.

The main requirement is consistency. When the website is written formally, the social media accounts joke and the support team answers in dry templates, the sense of a single company does not come together.

Story and content

People remember stories better than descriptions of services. Tell them why the company came about, what problem you were solving for yourselves before you started solving it for others, what you went through. A sincere story works harder than any list of advantages.

The story is then sustained by content: articles, breakdowns, case studies, videos. Regular useful material does two things at once — it demonstrates expertise and gives a reason to remember you between purchases.

For a small company a modest pace is enough. One coherent publication every two weeks, released for years, gives more than ten pieces in a row and silence afterwards.

What to do after launch

A brand is not a project with a delivery date. After launch the most important part begins: making sure the promises are kept and the styling does not drift.

Once a year it is useful to check yourself from the outside: open the website, social media, a commercial proposal and a letter to a customer one after another and see whether they look like the materials of a single company. Discrepancies usually accumulate unnoticed.

It makes sense to change the visual part when the company itself has changed — the audience, the services, the positioning. Refreshing the style simply because you are tired of it is expensive and undermines recognition.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to create a brand for a small company?

The range is wide and depends on the scope: a logo with a palette is one thing, a full platform with market research is another. It is sensible to start with the minimum set that covers current tasks and expand as you grow.

Can you do without a designer?

At the start, yes, if you choose a simple solution: a neat wordmark, two typefaces, three colours. What is worse is not “simple” but “garish and different every time”.

Do you need a brand if customers come by referral?

Yes, and especially in that case. A referral brings a person to the website, and from there the decision is made on the basis of what they see.

How do you know the brand is working?

By indirect signs: you are recognised without the logo, customers retell your difference in their own words, targeted enquiries come in and people argue about price less often.

What to do next

Write down four things on a single sheet: who you help, how you differ, how you speak and how you look. The points you cannot fill in concretely are your brand to-do list.
